Malvern freshman Wade Barkley rises for a 3-point shot during the Hornets’ 58-46 win over Strasburg in a Division district semifinal Tuesday at Dover High School. Barkley scored seven points in the fourth quarter, including a key 3-pointer that helped Malvern secure the victory and advance to the district championship game.

Malvern used a fast start and a clutch fourth-quarter spark from freshman Wade Barkley to defeat Strasburg 58-46 Tuesday night in a Division district semifinal at Dover High School, advancing the Hornets to the district championship game.

The victory also served as a rubber match between the rivals. Malvern defeated Strasburg 55-34 in mid-December before the Tigers answered with a 55-52 win on Feb. 20.

On Tuesday, the Hornets delivered when it mattered most.

“In this tournament, there were probably five or six teams that could win it,” Malvern head coach Dennis Tucci said. “We just talked about playing our best basketball. Tonight, we did that and we were rewarded.”

Malvern (16-9) jumped out to a strong start, building a 20-9 lead after the first quarter behind balanced scoring and aggressive defense. The Hornets extended the advantage to 29-18 by halftime.

Strasburg fought back in the second half, trimming the lead in the third quarter and keeping the game competitive down the stretch as emotions ran high on the floor and in the stands.

“The emotion helped us for about three quarters,” Tucci said. “But the last six minutes we got caught up in some of the little stuff. We’ve got to stay focused on being scrappy and playing with integrity.”

When Strasburg threatened late, Malvern responded with timely baskets.

Freshman Wade Barkley delivered one of the biggest moments of the night. Barkley scored all seven of his points in the fourth quarter, including a clutch 3-pointer that helped the Hornets maintain control.

“He was unbelievable,” Tucci said. “Wade has struggled from three all year, but he stepped up and hit a big one when we needed it. It was kind of poetic justice for him and for this team.”

Barkley said confidence helped him produce in the key moments.

“I just trusted myself and believed I could help the team,” Barkley said. “I felt like if I kept believing in my shot, it would fall eventually.”

Senior Luke Thomas led Malvern with 13 points, while Grady Barkley added 11 and Owen Warth scored nine. Holloman chipped in seven points.

Malvern finished with 22 field goals and shot 8-of-16 from the free-throw line.

Strasburg was led by Gage Moore with 20 points, while Brody Baughman scored eight and Ryan Becker added seven.

The Hornets also held advantages in rebounds (18-16) and turnovers, committing eight compared to 12 by Strasburg.

For Tucci, the win was another example of the resilience his team has shown throughout the season.

“Nothing has come easy for this group,” Tucci said. “They’ve worked hard all year and battled through a lot. To see them get a win like this in the tournament means a lot.”

Malvern will face River in the district championship game Saturday at 4 p.m. at the ECO Center in St. Clairsville. Strasburg finishes its season with a 13-11 record.
