A Carrollton man was killed and a Carrollton woman was injured Sunday when their vehicle went off Interstate 77 and rolled in Wood County, West Virginia.
Michael Todd Walker, 57, was pronounced dead at the scene of the single-vehicle crash, according to the Wood County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash was reported around 1:11 p.m. near the 180.2-mile marker of I-77.
Deputies said a 2025 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Wendy Sue Walker, 56, of Carrollton, was traveling north when it went off the left side of the highway, entered the earth median and rolled before coming to rest in the median.
Michael Walker was a passenger in the vehicle.
Wendy Walker was taken by ambulance to WVU Medicine Camden Clark Medical Center with injuries that were believed to be non-life-threatening. No one else was in the vehicle.
Northbound I-77 was temporarily closed at the 179-mile marker near Emerson Avenue while emergency crews worked at the scene and investigators examined the crash. The highway has since reopened.
The Wood County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Camden Clark Ambulance Service, Waverly Volunteer Fire Company, Williamstown Volunteer Fire Company, Eastwood Volunteer Fire Department, the West Virginia Division of Highways, Wood County Coroner’s Office and Pifer’s Towing.
The crash remains under investigation by Deputy M.E. Stewart. No charges have been filed.
The fatal crash was the second crash investigated by the sheriff’s office along I-77 in the same area Sunday.
Around 8:52 a.m., deputies responded to the 179-mile marker in Parkersburg after a 2024 Subaru Legacy driven by Natalie Elizabeth Bunner, 27, of Parkersburg, struck the rear of a Stuart Oil commercial vehicle while both vehicles were traveling south.
The commercial vehicle was driven by Matthew Hellinger, 45, of Parkersburg.
Bunner was taken to WVU Medicine Camden Clark Medical Center with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening. Hellinger was not injured.
Southbound I-77 was temporarily closed near Emerson Avenue following that crash but has since reopened.
The earlier crash also remains under investigation by the Wood County Sheriff’s Office.
