A 33-year-old Canton man wanted in connection with a fatal shooting last month has been arrested by members of the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.
Authorities said Ashaad Deshawn Carlisle was taken into custody early Wednesday morning by the U.S. Marshals-led Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force. Carlisle was wanted by the Canton Police Department on charges of aggravated murder and discharge of a firearm on or near prohibited premises.
Police said the charges stem from a shooting reported during the early morning hours of April 19 at an apartment building in the 3100 block of Tuscarawas Street West in Canton.
When officers arrived, they found 51-year-old Richard Staats suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Staats was transported to a hospital, where he later died after being taken off life support two days later, authorities said.
Following the victim’s death, warrants were issued for Carlisle on aggravated murder and firearms-related charges.
Officials said the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force immediately began searching for Carlisle, checking numerous locations throughout the Canton area. Carlisle was also featured earlier this week as the task force’s “Fugitive of the Week,” prompting community members to provide information about his whereabouts.
According to authorities, investigators received information Wednesday morning that Carlisle was staying at a home in the 700 block of Greenfield Avenue SW in Canton. Task force members located and arrested him without incident.
U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott praised the efforts of investigators and community members who assisted in locating the suspect.
“Detectives with the Canton Police Department and members of our task force worked quickly to identify this suspect and get him into custody,” Elliott said in a statement. “The tips received from community members after the suspect was featured as Fugitive of the Week on Monday were invaluable to getting this fugitive off the streets.”
