A man wanted on multiple domestic violence-related charges was arrested early Sunday after police say he brutally attacked a woman with a hammer, attempted to strangle her and threatened to kill her.
Alliance police were called to a residence around 6:26 p.m. Feb. 1 after a woman dialed 911 to report a disturbance. Dispatchers reported hearing significant screaming on the open line, and the caller stated that “Carl Baker beat her” before the call disconnected, according to a police report.
Officers arrived to find the victim suffering from severe injuries. Despite her condition, she was able to tell officers what happened before she began having seizures and was transported to Aultman Hospital for treatment.
Investigators said Baker, who was already wanted out of Alliance Municipal Court on charges including strangulation and domestic violence, had threatened the victim days earlier, telling her he was going to kill her because she reported his location to police. That threat was captured on the victim’s phone and had previously been shared with Alliance police.
According to the report, Baker attacked the woman by striking her multiple times in the head with a hammer, first in the mouth and then in the back of the head while she was in the living room. The victim was able to crawl to the kitchen in an attempt to call 911, but police say Baker briefly took her phone and continued the assault.
During the attack, Baker allegedly strangled the woman and repeatedly kicked or stomped on her chest. At some point, the victim regained access to her phone and was able to successfully call 911.
The victim later provided officers with a possible location for Baker, describing it as a blue house on a nearby street. Officers recognized the residence and, after speaking with a resident, were granted consent to enter and search the home. Baker was found upstairs and taken into custody without incident.
While being transported to the Alliance City Jail, police said Baker spit throughout the inside of the cruiser and kicked the doors.
Detectives processed the crime scene, collecting photographs and evidence that will be sent to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation for DNA testing. Officers later recovered clothing believed to have been worn by Baker during the assault.
An attempt to obtain a full statement from the victim was unsuccessful due to ongoing medical issues, police said.
After processing, Baker was transferred to the Stark County Jail. His bond has been set at $500,000, according to court records. He is scheduled to appear in Alliance Municipal Court on Feb. 2.
Baker faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, felonious assault causing serious physical harm, intimidation, strangulation causing serious physical harm, domestic violence, aggravated menacing and disrupting public services.
The case remains under investigation.
