One person was killed and two others were injured Wednesday afternoon in a three-vehicle crash on state Route 43 in Carroll County, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred at approximately 4:56 p.m. on June 24 near milepost 25 in Brown Township. Troopers from the New Philadelphia Post said a 2012 Subaru Outback was traveling eastbound on state Route 43 when a westbound 2016 Volkswagen Golf attempted to pass a 2019 Ram 1500 and collided head-on with the Subaru.

Investigators said the Ram was struck by both vehicles involved in the head-on crash. The pickup traveled off the north side of the roadway, while the Subaru overturned onto its roof in the roadway.

The driver of the Subaru, Lee D. Meadows, 70, of Waynesburg, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Carroll County Coroner’s Office. Troopers said Meadows was wearing a seat belt.

A passenger in the Subaru, Emily N. Meadows, 39, of Malvern, was transported by EMT Ambulance to Aultman Hospital. Authorities said her seat belt use is unknown.

The driver of the Ram, Cole Kneeper, 34, of Malvern, was wearing a seat belt and suffered minor injuries. He was treated at the scene by EMS.

The driver of the Volkswagen, Ronald R. Romano III, 31, of Malvern, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle, according to the patrol. He sustained serious injuries and was transported by Quad Ambulance to Mercy Hospital.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said speed is believed to have been a factor in the crash. Whether impairment played a role remains unknown.

The crash remains under investigation.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Great Trail Fire Department, Brown Township Fire Department, Quad Ambulance Service, EMT Ambulance Service, Carroll County Coroner’s Office, Ohio Department of Transportation, Keith’s Towing and Rocky’s Towing assisted at the scene.
