Most high school freshmen spend their first year adjusting to the speed of varsity competition.

Lydia Thomas spent hers making school history.

The Strasburg freshman helped lead the Lady Tigers to the first girls basketball state championship in program history during the winter, then closed out the school year by earning All-Ohio honors at the OHSAA State Track and Field Championships.

It was the type of debut season few athletes ever imagine.

“I honestly never thought my freshman year would go this well,” Thomas said. “It’s been such an amazing experience.”

Thomas’ impact stretched across three sports during her first year of high school. She competed in volleyball in the fall before becoming a key contributor on Strasburg’s historic state championship basketball team. She then turned her attention to track and field, where she qualified for state in three events.

At Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Thomas helped Strasburg’s 4×800-meter relay team of Mya Boylan, Lyla Wiggs, Kylie McKenzie and Thomas compete against the state’s best. Individually, she placed seventh in the Division III 400-meter dash in 58.41 seconds to earn All-Ohio honors while also qualifying in the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 8¾ inches.

For Thomas, the accomplishments are about much more than medals and podium finishes.

She credits the seniors, coaches and the entire Strasburg community for helping make her first varsity season unforgettable.

“I’ve had such supportive seniors, coaches and a whole town behind me,” Thomas said. “That support has meant everything.”

The success has only fueled her excitement for what lies ahead. Still, Thomas understands improvement isn’t simply about pushing harder every day.

As she prepares for the next chapter of her athletic career, she’s focused on finding balance — training consistently while allowing herself time to recover both physically and mentally.

“It’s important to work hard, but also to rest and have fun,” she said. “That balance helps you stay consistent and be ready for the next season.”

Behind every accomplishment, Thomas says, are her parents.

She describes them as her biggest supporters, crediting them for keeping her grounded despite a whirlwind freshman year while encouraging her to chase ambitious goals.

“My parents have been my rock,” Thomas said. “They keep me grounded, but they also encourage me to dream big.”

With three more years of high school still ahead, Thomas has already built a résumé most athletes would envy — a state basketball championship, an All-Ohio finish in track and appearances on one of Ohio’s biggest stages.

For Strasburg, it may simply be the beginning of what promises to be an exceptional high school career.
