Semi driver dies in Tuscarawas County highway crash; victim identified as 58-year-old man

The Ohio State Highway Patrol New Philadelphia Post is currently probing a single-vehicle accident that claimed the life of an individual on Interstate 77 near milepost 87 in Franklin Township, Tuscarawas County.

The incident unfolded on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, around 10:37 a.m., when a blue 2004 International 9900i was heading north on Interstate 77 close to milepost 87. The commercial vehicle veered off the right side of the road, descended an embankment, collided with a tree, and flipped over.

Identified as the driver of the International was Shelton E. McCoy, 58, from Salem, Ohio. McCoy was pronounced deceased at the location by the Tuscarawas County Coroner’s Office.

Various local agencies responded to the scene, including the Strasburg Fire Department, Dover Fire Department, Strasburg Police Department, Tuscarawas County Coroner’s Office, Ohio Department of Transportation, Canton Towing, and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.

Authorities have ruled out alcohol as a contributing factor in the crash. It was noted that the driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the incident.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
