The Massillon Tigers football team waited more than 50 years to win a state championship in football. They did just that Thursday night at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium.
After the Tigers pulled off the 7-2 victory over the Akron Hoban Knights, the community welcomed the winning Tigers back to town in style.
Massillon Police Chief Jason Saintenoy commended the community’s behavior while celebrating the championship in downtown.
“Everybody who was present to welcome home the 2023 Ohio Division II Football State Champion TIGERS on Thursday night represented Massillon with pride,” he said in a release posted to Facebook. “Our community gathered in mass downtown, celebrated as one, and did it with CLASS!”
Saintenoy acknowledged not a single incident occurred during the celebration.
“Thousands of people celebrated downtown without a single incident to mention,” the chief said. “It was our pleasure to be a part of it with you.”
