Two residents and four firefighters were treated for injuries after a fire broke out Monday afternoon at a three-unit apartment building on Cleveland Avenue Northwest, according to information provided to Jordan Miller News by the Canton Fire Department.
Firefighters were called to the apartment complex at 2216 Cleveland Ave. NW at 2:14 p.m. Arrival crews found heavy smoke coming from all floors of the structure, fire officials said.
The fire originated in the basement and spread upward through the building. One of the occupants attempted to extinguish the fire on his own while trying to rescue his dog before firefighters arrived, officials said. The dog survived and is reported to be doing fine.
Both occupants of the building were transported to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation but have since been released, according to the fire department. No other civilians were inside the three-unit complex at the time.
Four firefighters were injured while battling the blaze. Two were transported to the hospital for treatment and later released. Two others suffered minor injuries, did not require hospital transport, and returned to duty to complete their shifts.
The fire was declared under control and operations were completed by 4:55 p.m., the department said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
