A 2-month-old baby was ejected from a vehicle during a rollover crash Tuesday morning on Interstate 77 in Tuscarawas County, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The crash happened around 8:10 a.m. on I-77 north, south of the U.S. 250 split, according to the patrol’s New Philadelphia Post.

Troopers said a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt was traveling north when it went off the right side of the highway, struck a fence and utility box and overturned.

Three people were inside the vehicle, including the infant, who investigators determined was not properly secured in a car seat at the time of the crash. The baby was ejected as the vehicle overturned, according to the patrol.

A medical helicopter was called to the scene and transported the infant to an area hospital. The driver and a female passenger were taken by ambulance for treatment. Information about the extent of their injuries was not immediately available.

Both northbound lanes of I-77 were closed for approximately 90 minutes while emergency crews worked at the scene and the medical helicopter landed.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to investigate what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway.
