A Saturday afternoon fire left multiple pets dead and several residents temporarily displaced after flames tore through a two-story apartment building in the 4600 block of Applegrove St. NW.
A neighbor reported smoke coming from a nearby unit around 4:55 p.m. on Nov. 29, according to the Jackson Township Fire Department. When crews arrived, they found smoke and fire showing from a window and door of the four-unit structure, which has garages on the ground level.
Firefighters launched an aggressive attack on the blaze and conducted searches throughout the building. Three residents were evaluated at the scene, but no one required hospital transport. The occupants of the affected apartment were not home when the fire started.
Although no residents or firefighters were injured, two dogs and one cat were found dead inside the involved unit. A second cat remains missing.
Damage to the structure and its contents is estimated at $80,000, officials said. Residents of three apartments were displaced, though Red Cross assistance was not requested.
Jackson Township responded with a Medic Unit, two engines, Tower 1, Chief 1, Deputy Chief 3, a battalion chief, safety officer, two fire investigators and a public information officer. Mutual aid came from Green, Plain Township and North Canton fire departments, along with the Jackson Township Police Department.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
