Accidental milk spill sends 300 gallons into Sandy Creek in Minerva

An equipment overflow at Minerva Dairy on Aug. 12 caused roughly 300 gallons of raw milk to enter Sandy Creek, prompting an evening response from local officials.

Village Service Director James T. Williams said the spill reached the waterway through a storm drain connected to Minerva Municipal Park. He received word of the incident just after 8:20 p.m.

By 9:50 p.m., Minerva firefighters were pumping hundreds of gallons of water per minute into the creek on the advice of the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. The goal, Williams said, was to dilute the milk and increase oxygen levels in the stream to protect aquatic life.

No dead fish, plants, or unusual odors were detected in the area, according to Williams.

Minerva Dairy did not respond to requests for comment from Jordan Miller News.
