Republic Steel has announced they are laying off 500 employees at between Canton and Lackawanna, New York locations.
The company cited decreased demand for leaded steel, raw material costs, and the age of the 8th Street facility.
Although the Mexican-based company that owns that plant calls it a “temporary furlough,” it appears to be permanent, according to a statement issued by Republic Steel.
Mill operations in Mexico will continue without interruption.
Employees of Republic Steel had not received the 90-day closing notice that is required. The city was also not notified of the closing.
