HS Golf Wednesday: Garaway, Tusky Valley’s Thompson reach state; Dover, New Philadelphia’s Devore reach districts

Garaway’s girls’ golf team, along with Tuscarawas Valley’s Susan Thompson, both advanced to the Division II Girls State Golf Tournament.

The Lady Pirates won the Division II Girls East District Tournament at Cambridge Country Club on Wednesday with a total score of 332 – nearly twenty shots lower than that of runner-up Tusky Valley (351).

Garaway’s sophomore-laden squad was led by Sammi Miller, who shot a tournament-low 74, while Sydni Prysi (80), Brooklyn Numbers (88), and Hannah Steiner (90) also contributed to the Pirates’ final score.

As for Thompson, the Trojans senior carded a 77 and advanced as the lone individual out of the field.

Carrollton’s girls finished third at 387, led by Claire Hostetler’s 89. Indian Valley (438) finished sixth and was led by Kaylie Wrather (96).

Both Garaway and Thompson will compete at The Ohio State University’s Gray Course in Columbus on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 15-16.

DIVISION I GIRLS SECTIONAL

Dover and New Philadelphia senior Sydney Devore advanced to the district round after Wednesday’s Division I East District Sectional Tournament at River Greens Golf Course.

The Crimson Tornadoes posted a 378 to finish in second place among all teams. Junior Riley Schie led Dover with an 82, while Ava Adams (91), Mya Downing (92), and Kiley McIntosh (113) carded qualifying scores.

John Glenn won the tournament with a 358, led by Gracie Milam’s 79 – which was second to Devore’s medalist-earning 74.

For the Quakers, who failed to qualify with only three scores, Emma Menapace posted an 89 and Kelce Wing a 104.

The Tornadoes and Devore will play at EagleSticks in Zanesville on Monday, Oct. 11.
