HS Sports Thursday: Strasburg volleyball bests Sandy Valley; Union Local beats Harrison Central in football

The Strasburg Tigers won a four-set volleyball match against the Sandy Valley Cardinals, 25-14, 25-23, 15-25, 25-12.

Danielle Wright led Strasburg with 15 points and 10 digs, while Maddy Edwards had nine points, 35 assists, and 13 digs.

CLAYMONT 23-20-25-25-15, RIDGEWOOD 25-25-19-17-13

Claymont rallied from a 2-0 set deficit to best Ridgewood High School in five sets.

Zayva Morgan had 52 assists for the Mustangs (along with 7 points and 5 digs), while Ryleigh Ronald had 19 kills.

MINERVA 27-25-25, CANTON SOUTH 25-23-21

The Minerva Lions swept the Canton South Wildcats in straight sets on Thursday night.

Abby Wheeler had 19 kills and four digs for the Lions, while Madelyn Morckel had 13 assists and two aces.

Gabby Romano had 10 digs, eight kills, and two blocks for Minerva.

TRIWAY 25-25-25, FAIRLESS 8-9-13

Triway had few problems against Fairless on Thursday night.

The Falcons fell to 1-8 on the season with the loss.

TUSCARAWAS CENTRAL CATHOLIC 25-17-25-25, CONOTTON VALLEY 13-25-15-19

Tuscarawas Central Catholic won in four sets over Conotton Valley.

TUSCARAWAS VALLEY 25-18-25-25, GARAWAY 23-25-23-14

The Trojans topped the Pirates in four sets at Garaway High School.

DOVER 25-25-25, CARROLLTON 15-11-17

Dover won a straight-sets volleyball match with Carrollton.

Taylor Luneborg pitched in 11 kills and 14 points for the Crimson Tornadoes, while Morgan Kiser added nine kills and 10 points.

Dover also got good performances from Reece Palmatier (26 digs, 7 points) and Katie Bleininger (28 assists, 6 points).

MARIETTA 25-25-25, NEW PHILADELPHIA 10-18-20

Marietta won in straight sets over the New Philadelphia Quakers.

Ava Riesen (8 kills), Brooklyn Crowell (6 kills, 17 digs), Kallyn Perks (five digs, 16 assists) led New Phila.

FOOTBALL

UNION LOCAL 41, HARRISON CENTRAL 18

Union Local won a Thursday night football contest against Harrison Central, 41-18.

Carter Blake threw three touchdown passes and added a rushing score for the Jets (3-0), while Hayden McCrate scored two rushing touchdowns.

Harrison Central drops to 2-2 with the loss.

BOYS GOLF

GARAWAY 158, MALVERN 172 SANDY VALLEY 190

The Garaway Pirates won a triangular match with Malvern and Sandy Valley on Thursday at Black Gold in Sugarcreek.

Charles Beachy shot a career-low 2-under 34 for the Pirates, while Trace Gibson also had 40. Caleb Meek (41) and Carter Miller (43) also scored for the Bucs.

Despite the Cardinals finishing last in the match, Connor Ritter’s 2-under 34 tied Bacy for match medalist.

For the Hornets, Ethan Bush shot a 2-over 38.

RIDGEWOOD 178, STRASBURG 179

Ridgewood staved off Strasburg by a single shot, improving the Generals to 10-1 for the season.

Charlie Kirkpatrick scored a 41 for Ridgewood, while Cooper King (43), Benny Shuck (45) and Braden Bookless (49) also scored for the Generals.

HILAND 148, CONOTTON VALLEY 212

Brookston Hummel’s 3-under 33 led Hiland to an IVC win over Conotton Valley. L

The rest of Hiland’s qualifying scorers all broke 40: Carter Mishler and Kenny Weaver (38s) and Nathan Kline (39).

GIRLS GOLF

GARAWAY 157, RIVER VIEW 191, RIDGEWOOD 249

Garaway’s girls’ golf team also picked up a win in a triangular match on Thursday – against River View and Ridgewood.

Sammi Miller and Sydni Prisi each shot 28 to lead the Bucs, while Brooklyn Numbers had 39 and Hannah Steiner shot 42.

Shannon Cassidy led Ridgewood with a 38, and Paige Nicely was River View’s top scorer at 40.

CARROLLTON 187, CANTON SOUTH 201

Carrollton’s girls golfers advanced to 9-2 (6-2 in EBC play) with a 14-stroke victory over Canton South at Carroll Meadows.

Ashlee Garner and Claire Hostetler led the Warriors with respective scores of 42 and 47, while Olivia Nist and Paige Davis each carded 51s.

Delaney Kruger led the Wildcats (6-4, 3-3) with 44 – the lone Canton South golfer to break 50 for the nine.

WEST BRANCH 171, MINERVA 181

West Branch was victorious in their Thursday match against Minerva.

Logan Good (44) led the Lions in scoring, followed by Aaron Honeycutt (45), Connor Good, and Andrew Gillis (both 46).

The Lions fall to 11-5 (6-4 in EBC play).

NEW PHILADELPHIA 2, CAMBRIDGE 0

The Quakers’ soccer team topped the Cambridge Bobcats 2-0 on Thursday night.

Elliott Warner and Kobe Gaskin each scored a goal for New Philadelphia (3-3).
