Columbus Police shot and killed a 15-year-old girl Tuesday evening after police were dispatched to a neighbor after females said there was a girl with a knife.

When police arrived on scene, body camera footage showed the 15-year-old girl going after two females with what appeared to be a knife.

The officer was out of his vehicle nearly 10 seconds before he drew the gun from his holster and fired four shots. After he fired the shots, he could be heard saying “she came at her with a knife.”

Columbus Police Chief said first aide was immediately rendered to the girl who shot. She later died.

In the video, it appeared the 15-year-old was attempting to stab two different females with what appeared to be knife.

“It’s a tragic day in the city of Columbus. Horrible, heartbreaking situation,” said Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther.

“I’m not just the mayor, I’m a father. The city of Columbus lost a 15-year-old girl,” said Mayor Ginther. “We know based on this footage, the officer took action to protect another young girl in our community.”

The name of the officer who fired the shots has not been released at this time but the Columbus Police chief said he will not be on the streets for the time being until the investigation comes to an end.

BCI is doing their own independent review of the shooting and will turn over their findings to the prosecutor.
