A Minerva man is dead after a two-vehicle accident Monday afternoon on State Route 800 in Fairfield Township (Tuscarawas County).

The Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to the accident scene just after 4 p.m. April 12 near milepost 28.6.

Officials said that a 2005 Chrysler Sebring, driven by Douglas W. Arkenburgh, 51, of Minerva, was traveling southwest on SR 800 when it went left of center, colliding head-on with semi dump truck loaded with gravel.

OSHP said the dump truck went off the right side of the roadway, striking a guardrail.

Arkenburgh died at the scene. Officials said he was not wearing a seat belt.

OSHP said the driver of the dump truck, Monroe A. Schlabach, 69, of Millersburg, was not wearing a seat belt either but was uninjured in the crash.

State patrol was assisted on scene by Fairfield Township Fire Department, Smith Ambulance, Tuscarawas County Coroner’s Office, ODOT, Rosenberry’s Towing and Jim’s Towing.

The accident remains under investigation.
