Two indicted for murder, other charges in New Philadelphia murder

The Tuscarawas County Grand Jury handed down indictments against Sajjaad J. Butler, 19, of Canton and TeQuan A. Franklin, 21, of Canton, in the shooting death of 22-year-old Gaven Carlisle of New Philadelphia.

Both are accused of setting up Carlisle during a marijuana drug deal. He died after being shot.

Burlet and Franklin were both charged with Aggravated Murder, Murder and two counts of Aggravated Robbery. Three firearm specifications were added on all counts, including a six-year specification for the use of a fully automatic rifle and a 5-year specification for shooting from an automobile.

Butler was arrested March 5, the day of the shooting. He remains in the Tuscarawas County Jail being held on a $2,000,000 bond. Franklin was arrested March 18 and is currently in the Tuscarawas County Jail.

Both will be arraigned on the indictment next week before Common Pleas Judge Michael Ernest.

If convicted, each could receive a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
