A 12-year-old girl who died Saturday afternoon after a utility vehicle overturned and crashed near her home in Harrison County has been identified as Ana Zarkovic, a seventh-grade student at Harrison Hills City School District.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the single-vehicle crash happened on Old Smyrna Road, just off State Route 800 in Freeport Township. Troopers said a black 2016 Kawasaki Mule Pro overturned on the roadway, then veered off and hit a ditch.
Zarkovic was taken to Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center in Cambridge, where she was pronounced dead, authorities said.
A 14-year-old passenger suffered minor injuries and was treated before being released to her parents.
Authorities are still investigating the crash but have indicated that unsafe speed is believed to be a contributing factor. The Steubenville Highway Patrol Post is leading the investigation.
