One man is dead and another is in custody after a single-vehicle crash early Saturday morning in New Philadelphia, authorities said.
According to the New Philadelphia Police Department, officers were called at about 2:06 a.m. Aug. 23 to South Broadway and Hilan Avenue SW for a report of a crash with injuries.
When officers arrived, they found the vehicle and a deceased adult male passenger inside. Police said the driver had fled the scene on foot but was located and arrested a short distance away.
Investigators believe alcohol and speed played a role in the crash, though the incident remains under investigation. Police said names are not being released until charges are filed and next of kin are notified.
Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact New Philadelphia police at 330-343-4488.
Authorities thanked the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio State Highway Patrol, Tuscarawas County Coroner’s Office, New Philadelphia Fire Department, and New Philadelphia Street Department for assisting at the scene.
