An 88-year-old New Philadelphia man was cited after authorities say he drove the wrong direction on U.S. Route 250 and later crashed into another vehicle.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported that calls began coming in shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday about a vehicle traveling west in the eastbound lanes of U.S. 250. With no troopers immediately in the area, dispatchers coordinated information to nearby units and local law enforcement to track the vehicle’s movements.

According to the preliminary investigation, the driver eventually entered Interstate 77 and continued northbound before colliding with another vehicle near the southbound I-77 ramp that connects to U.S. 250 east. The ramp was closed for about 30 minutes during the on-scene investigation.

Both drivers sustained minor injuries.

The wrong-way driver received a citation, and troopers say they are also submitting paperwork to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles requesting a retest of the driver’s qualifications to remain licensed.
