An 18-year-old Summit County man wanted in connection with the theft of firearms was taken into custody late Friday morning in New Philadelphia, according to the U.S. Marshals Service and local police.

Derquan Edwards, 18, was wanted by the Akron Police Department on a warrant for theft of firearms. A U.S. Marshals task force located Edwards in the 300 block of Ray Avenue NE, where he was arrested without incident, officials said.

The New Philadelphia Police Department said it was notified Friday morning that the Marshals Service would be conducting the operation in the neighborhood. Because of the area’s proximity to East Elementary and Central Elementary schools, School Resource Officers were positioned at both buildings “out of an abundance of caution,” according to a press release from Chief Tessa Pohovey.

Police said the situation was resolved safely, and no threat was posed to the schools. All questions regarding the arrest were directed to the U.S. Marshals Service.
