Marlington junior Irelyn Johnson had a Saturday to remember. Just hours after winning the Eastern Buckeye Conference (EBC) cross country championship on her home course, she capped the day by celebrating with friends at the school’s homecoming dance.
Johnson dominated the girls’ race, finishing in 18:34.0 — nearly a full minute ahead of runner-up Tateum Richard of Minerva, who crossed at 19:23.
“I wanted to go out strong, have a good race, and then enjoy homecoming night,” Johnson said. “It couldn’t have gone any better.”
Although she had already been named homecoming queen earlier in the season, the timing of the dance made for a storybook day — a conference champion by morning and a queen by night.
Saturday’s victory marked Johnson’s second straight EBC title, showing how far she’s come since finishing eighth as a freshman.
“I was disappointed my freshman year,” she said. “That race motivated me to work harder. My coaches, teammates, and parents have supported me so much along the way.”
Running on Marlington’s home course, Johnson said her coaches told her she could celebrate if she finished strong — and she did, raising her arms as she crossed the line.
“It was a great feeling,” she said. “Running at home and having everyone cheering made it even more special.”
Minerva placed three runners in the top five — Richard, Makenzie Beavers, and Charlie Galley — to secure the team championship. Salem freshman Addison Hopple finished sixth.
For Johnson, the day ended perfectly — a morning of victory followed by a night of celebration.
“Winning the race and then getting to celebrate with my friends that night made it a day I’ll never forget,” she said.
