A Tusky Valley High School football player was left paralyzed after suffering a severe neck injury during Friday night’s game against Waynedale, according to his family.

The player, 15-year-old Mayson White, fractured his C4 vertebra during the game and was rushed to Akron Children’s Hospital, his mother, Amanda White, said. Doctors told the family the fracture was placing pressure on Mayson’s spine.

Mayson underwent surgery and remains hospitalized. In an emotional update shared by his mother, the family revealed that while the surgery went well, Mayson is paralyzed.

“He has some movement in his right arm and can shrug his shoulders, but there’s no movement in his legs,” Amanda White said. “Although this was not the outcome we hoped for, we are so thankful he is still here with us.”

She added that Mayson can respond by nodding his head and still makes expressions when his family talks to him. The family is asking for continued prayers and support as Mayson begins his recovery journey.
