With dangerously high heat indexes forecasted for the region, the City of Canton is partnering with Refuge of Hope and the Stark Area Regional Transit Authority (SARTA) to provide designated cooling centers and free transportation for residents on Thursday and Friday.

Two locations will serve as cooling centers:

  • Civic Center Lobby, 1101 Market Ave N., will be open Thursday, July 24, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Guests must enter through the main entrance. Water will be available.
  • Refuge of Hope, 715 Second St NE, will be open Thursday, July 24, and Friday, July 25, from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Guests must enter through Door #4. Water and food will be provided.

To help residents access the cooling centers, SARTA will offer free transportation. Riders can board any regular route to the Cornerstone Transit Center on Cherry Avenue SE and inform the driver they are traveling to a cooling center. No fare will be charged. Those headed to the Civic Center should take Route #105.

Residents in need of transportation outside of SARTA’s service hours may call Canton City Dispatch at 330-649-5800 for assistance.

City officials urge residents to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities, and check on vulnerable neighbors during the heat wave.
