he City of Canton is partnering with community organizations to provide cooling centers and free transportation for residents as dangerously high temperatures and heat index values are forecast across the region.
The cooling centers will be available Monday, June 29, through Friday, July 3, according to a city announcement issued June 26.
Residents can visit the following locations:
- Canton City Fire Station No. 4, 2502 Cleveland Ave. NW, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
- Refuge of Hope, 715 Second St. NE, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Guests should enter through Door No. 4. Water and food will be available.
- Stark Library locations during regular business hours, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.
- Crossroads United Methodist Church, 120 Cleveland Ave. SW, second floor, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.
- ICAN Housing, 1214 Market Ave. N, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
To help residents reach the cooling centers, the Stark Area Regional Transit Authority (SARTA) is offering free transportation. Riders may board any regular SARTA route to the Cornerstone Transit Center on Cherry Avenue SE and tell the driver they are traveling to a cooling center. No fare will be charged.
Residents who need transportation outside of SARTA’s operating hours can call Canton City Dispatch at 330-649-5800 for assistance.
City officials encourage residents to stay hydrated, limit time outdoors during peak afternoon heat and check on elderly neighbors and other vulnerable individuals as temperatures remain elevated.
