Authorities have identified a man whose body was recovered from the Tuscarawas River on Monday afternoon in New Philadelphia.

Detective Capt. Adam Fisher of the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were notified shortly after 3 p.m. June 22 when a 911 caller reported that individuals had spotted a body floating downstream in the river near the South Broadway Bridge.

According to Fisher, personnel with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency were conducting research in the river and encountered the body as they made their way back through the area.

Emergency responders from the New Philadelphia Fire Department, New Philadelphia Police Department and the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. The body was ultimately recovered from the river behind Buehler’s Fresh Foods in New Philadelphia.

The Tuscarawas County Coroner’s Office on Tuesday identified the deceased as Jacob Holbrook, 29, of the New Philadelphia area.

Coroner Dr. Jeff Cameron said Holbrook’s body was found in the Tuscarawas River beneath the South Broadway Bridge. The body was transported to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

The coroner’s office said the cause and manner of death remain pending, and all autopsy results are still being reviewed.

Fisher previously said there were no apparent signs of trauma observed at the scene.

The death investigation remains ongoing by the Tuscarawas County Coroner’s Office and the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office.
