The newly formed Northeast Senate League has selected longtime educator and athletic administrator Curt Hamilton as its first commissioner, officials announced, as the conference prepares to begin competition in the 2028–29 school year.
Hamilton brings more than 30 years of experience in Ohio high school athletics to the role and is expected to guide the league through its formation and early development.
The Northeast Senate League was created to unite eight area programs — Carrollton, Claymont, Fairless, Marlington, Minerva, Sandy Valley, Tuscarawas Valley and Tuslaw — many of which share decades-long rivalries dating back to the original Senate League.
School leaders said the conference was formed with a focus on stability, competitive balance and preserving traditional matchups.
“To lead this mission, we needed someone who understands the landscape of Northeast Ohio athletics and shares our commitment to student-centered opportunities,” representatives of the founding superintendents said in a statement. “We have found that leader in Curt Hamilton.”
Hamilton has served since 2020 as assistant commissioner of the Eastern Buckeye Conference, where he gained experience in league administration and officiating assignments.
He also spent 30 years at Marlington High School as an American history teacher and social studies department chair. In athletics, Hamilton served more than two decades as head wrestling coach and continues to work as an event site coordinator.
At the state level, he is a Class I registered official with the Ohio High School Athletic Association in volleyball, wrestling and track and field. He was inducted into the Stark County Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2018 and the Top Gun Wrestling Tournament Hall of Fame in 2024.
As commissioner, Hamilton will be responsible for finalizing league bylaws, organizing schedules and coordinating officials ahead of the league’s launch.
“These schools represent the heart of high school sports in our region,” Hamilton said in a statement. “I am honored to serve as the founding commissioner and look forward to working with school leaders to build a conference that provides a premier experience for student-athletes and communities.”
League officials said Hamilton’s appointment is a key step as the conference works to establish a long-term structure and revive historic rivalries across the three-county region.
