A fire that broke out early Monday in the attic of a three-story home on Canton’s northwest side was quickly brought under control, though several pets remain missing, fire officials said.

The Canton Fire Department was dispatched at 12:35 a.m. Monday to a reported structure fire at 1302 14th St. NW, where initial reports indicated flames were located in the attic.

When crews arrived, they found smoke showing from an attic window at the front of the occupied home. Firefighters entered the residence and located the fire in the attic, bringing it under control quickly. Officials said most of the damage was contained to the attic area, although some water used to extinguish the fire reached the basement.

A woman, her two sons — ages 21 and 15 — and an elderly woman who lives in the basement were evacuated from the home as firefighters arrived. The American Red Cross was called to assist the elderly resident, the mother, and one of the sons, along with the husband who arrived later.

Fire officials said 12 cats and one dog were inside the home at the time of the fire. The dog and eight cats were located safely, but four cats remained unaccounted for as of Monday. The Humane Society responded to assist with the animals.

No civilians were injured in the fire. One firefighter was treated at the scene for heat exhaustion but remained on duty.

The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation.

Fire officials estimate the blaze caused about $5,000 in structural damage and $2,000 in damage to contents inside the home.

The fire department was dispatched at 12:35 a.m. and arrived on scene at 12:41 a.m., according to the incident report.
