A Canton man will spend more than three years in prison following convictions tied to a criminal case that initially involved allegations of an abduction at knifepoint in Jackson Township.

Jamie Triplett, 39, was sentenced Feb. 9 in Stark County Common Pleas Court to 42 months in prison after a jury convicted him of tampering with evidence and disrupting public services, both felonies, along with aggravated menacing and two counts of criminal damaging or endangering, all misdemeanors.

The case originated in September after a woman reported being taken from a shopping area along Sunset Strip Avenue NW. Authorities later located both individuals at a motel in Perry Township the following day. Investigators did not publicly detail the nature of their relationship.

Triplett was acquitted by a jury on a third-degree felony charge of abduction. Other charges, including aggravated robbery and aggravated menacing, were dismissed by the court prior to jury deliberations, while two assault counts were dropped by prosecutors during the trial. A repeat violent offender specification attached to the robbery charge was also removed.

In a separate ruling the same day, the court revoked Triplett’s probation stemming from a 2012 case involving convictions for rape, kidnapping and assault. He had previously received judicial release after serving part of a 20-year sentence.

The probation revocation requires Triplett to serve an additional six years and three months in prison. The judge ordered the sentence in the current case to be served consecutively, bringing his total remaining prison time to more than nine years.

Court records show Triplett has an extensive criminal history, including prior involvement with the juvenile justice system. He did not address the court before sentencing.
