After more than nine decades serving Stark County, Fishers Foods announced Tuesday it will close its last remaining store.
The family-owned grocer said its final day of operations will be Oct. 14, 2025. The decision was announced in a Facebook post and a letter sent to employees.
“Fishers was never just a grocery store. It was a meeting place, a memory maker, a community space and a friend to everyone,” the Fisher family said in the statement. “Generations of families grew up in our aisles, just as our own family did.”
The company said it had hoped to secure its future through a new project, but that plan did not materialize. Despite efforts to keep the business sustainable, the family determined closure was unavoidable.
Fishers Foods opened its first location in 1933 and grew into a community staple. The business partnered with local suppliers, served generations of customers and was long recognized as one of the region’s few remaining independent grocers.
The company said it is working with its associates, many of whom have spent decades with the store, and with the local union “to ensure we close the right way.”
While the grocery store will close, Fishers said its OHLQ state liquor wholesale accounts will continue operating as usual, and its retail liquor store will remain open through Oct. 14.
A closing sale begins Oct. 1 with 30% off grocery, frozen, dairy and general merchandise. Deeper discounts are expected in the final weeks before closure. A limited line of Fishers merchandise will also be available starting Oct. 8.
“To our customers, teammates, suppliers and community partners: thank you for 92 years of trust,” the Fisher family wrote. “Fishers has always been about people. That part doesn’t end.”
