Canton Civic Center, Centennial Plaza set for big acts and busy fall season

For more than a decade, Blake Schilling has been the driving force behind some of Canton’s biggest concerts, sporting events, and community gatherings. Now, as general manager of the Canton Civic Center and Centennial Plaza under ASM Global, he’s looking to take things to the next level.

Schilling, who began his career with ASM Global 23 years ago at Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh, has managed the Canton Civic Center since 2012. In June, ASM Global expanded its footprint in Stark County by taking over operations at Centennial Plaza in downtown Canton, with a goal of bringing higher-caliber events to the outdoor venue.

That effort kicks off Sept. 19 with the plaza’s first-ever ticketed concert featuring country star Niko Moon.

“This is about enhancing what Centennial Plaza can be,” Schilling said. “We want to give people more reasons to come downtown and make sure we’re delivering top-tier events for the community.”

The move marks a shift from the plaza’s tradition of free events, though Schilling said a mix of ticketed and free programming will continue in the future. Streets will be closed around the plaza for the Niko Moon concert, with a secure perimeter, police presence, and bag checks in place to ensure safety.

The Civic Center itself is also gearing up for a busy fall. Cole Swindell performs Sept. 5, followed by Dwight Yoakam and The Mavericks on Sept. 25. The Hall of Fame City Comic Con arrives Oct. 11, with November bringing the Patriot Ball, bull riding, cheerleading competitions, and a country double bill featuring Dustin Lynch and Scotty McCreery.

Christian music has been another big draw, with recent sellouts by artists like CeCe Winans and Chris Tomlin. And in December, the action continues with MMA fans packing the Civic Center for Cage Thunder.

“Whether it’s concerts, sporting events, or community gatherings, our goal is the same,” Schilling said. “We want to create memorable experiences that bring people together and make Canton a destination.”
