FORT STEWART, Ga. — An active shooter opened fire at Fort Stewart on Wednesday morning, injuring five soldiers and prompting a swift lockdown of the military installation located roughly 40 miles southwest of Savannah.

In a statement, base officials confirmed that the gunfire erupted in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area. All five injured soldiers were initially treated on-site before being transported to Winn Army Community Hospital for further care.

The shooter was apprehended at 11:35 a.m. EDT, and officials say there is no longer a threat to the community.

“Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield first responders quickly secured the area and took the alleged shooter into custody,” the statement read.

The surrounding community was also impacted, with nearby schools placed on lockdown as a precaution.

Federal authorities are now assisting in the investigation. The FBI said it is coordinating with Army Criminal Investigation Command after offering support from agents based in Savannah.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp responded to the incident, expressing sorrow for those affected.

“As we remain in close contact with law enforcement on the ground, Marty, the girls, and I are saddened by today’s tragedy at Ft. Stewart,” Kemp said. “We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask that Georgians everywhere do the same.”

Further details, including the identity of the suspect and the condition of the injured soldiers, have not yet been released. The investigation remains ongoing.
