A suspect is dead after two Alliance police officers opened fire during a confrontation Tuesday afternoon, according to Alliance Police Capt. Don Wensel.
Wensel told Jordan Miller News that three officers were involved in the incident on Johnson Avenue. Two of the officers discharged their weapons. All three officers were uninjured.
The incident stemmed from an investigation into an earlier altercation at a local business involving a firearm, Wensel said.
As part of the follow-up investigation, officers identified a vehicle believed to be connected to the earlier incident through a description and license plate information.
Police later attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver failed to yield and continued for a short distance before pulling into the parking lot of an apartment complex on Johnson Avenue, according to Wensel.
Officers confronted the suspect in the parking lot, where Wensel said the suspect produced a firearm.
Two of the three officers at the scene then fired their weapons. The suspect was struck and died.
Authorities have not released the identity of the suspect. It was also not immediately clear whether the suspect lived at the apartment complex or why the suspect was allegedly involved in the earlier incident at the business.
Wensel did not confirm whether the suspect pointed the firearm at officers before they opened fire.
The three officers involved have each been with the Alliance Police Department for approximately three years, Wensel said. Their names have not been released.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was called to conduct the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
Additional information is expected to be released as the investigation continues.
