A 20-year-old Canton man accused of severely beating a 63-year-old man and stomping on his head has been bound over to the Stark County Court of Common Pleas to face felony charges.
John A. Range III, of Canton, is charged with attempted murder, felonious assault and having weapons while under disability in connection with the June 20 assault near Ninth Street and Walnut Avenue NE. He remains held in the Stark County Jail on a $1 million bond.
According to a criminal complaint, the altercation began as a fight before Range allegedly knocked the victim to the ground. Prosecutors allege that after the victim lost consciousness, Range repeatedly stomped on his head.
Court records state the victim was left critically injured and hospitalized, where he was unresponsive and intubated following the assault.
Range is also charged with having weapons while under disability because he is prohibited from possessing a firearm due to a prior felony conviction.
During an initial appearance in Canton Municipal Court, Judge Jeremy J. Foltz set bond at $1 million and ordered Range to have no contact with the victim.
Following a preliminary hearing, the case was bound over to the Stark County Court of Common Pleas, where Range will face further proceedings on the felony charges.
The case remains pending.
