Records tumbled and team championships were decided Friday night as Salem’s girls and Minerva’s boys captured Eastern Buckeye Conference track and field titles at Sebo Stadium.
Salem’s girls piled up 157 points to outdistance runner-up Marlington (133), while Minerva’s boys totaled 131 points to edge Salem (114.5) for the conference crown. West Branch finished third in the boys standings with 97 points, followed by Marlington (85.5), Alliance (36) and Carrollton (28). In the girls standings, Minerva placed third with 88 points, West Branch was fourth with 69, Alliance fifth with 26 and Carrollton sixth with 19.
Salem’s girls were powered by a dominant performance from Chaya Murray, who broke meet records in both the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash. Murray won the 100 in 12.29 seconds, surpassing the previous mark of 12.75 set by Alliance’s Meghan Frazier in 2021, then returned to capture the 200 in 25.17, bettering the record of 26.06 set earlier this year by Marlington’s Allie Gill.
The Quakers also set meet records in the girls 4×100 and 4×400 relays. Salem’s 4×100 team of Angeline Hoffaker, Karlie Sampson, Abby Knickerbocker and Murray finished in 50.09, topping the previous conference record set by Carrollton earlier this season. Salem’s 4×400 squad of Knickerbocker, Laura Hovorka, Sampson and Murray posted a winning time of 4:00.09 to eclipse the prior record of 4:05.42 set in 2021.
Minerva’s boys leaned on standout sprint and distance efforts. Owen Shick broke conference records in both the 100 and 200. He won the 100 in 10.96, breaking the previous mark of 11.13, and captured the 200 in 22.27, besting the old record of 22.42. Minerva sophomore Tateum Richard broke the meet record in the 800.
The Lions also got dominant performances from Rowen Hoffee, who won both the 1,600 and 800 runs, and Owen Yoder, who captured the 3,200 and finished second in the 1,600. Wyatt Gonzalez added a meet record in the high jump by clearing 6 feet, 5 inches.
Marlington produced several standout performances, including Cameron Evanich, who won the boys 400 in a meet-record 50.32, while teammate Logan Kuhn also finished under the previous meet mark at 50.34. Olivia Callahan recorded a meet-record 45.63 in the girls 300 hurdles. Irelyn Johnson also set a meet record in the girls 3,200, finishing in 11:00.38.
Salem’s Lucas Adams added another record-breaking performance, winning the boys long jump with a leap of 22-5.75.
