The two people killed in a head-on crash Saturday morning in Perry Township have been identified by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Cole Scholey, 21, of Beach City, and Kelly Kemp, 56, of Massillon, died following the two-vehicle crash on U.S. Route 62 near mile post 11, according to investigators.

Troopers from the Canton Post responded to the crash at approximately 7:16 a.m. Saturday, May 16.

Investigators said Scholey was driving a 2019 Ford Ranger northbound on U.S. Route 62 when the vehicle traveled left of center and collided head-on with a southbound 2021 Honda Odyssey driven by Kemp.

Scholey was transported by Perry Township Fire Department to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Kemp was pronounced dead at the scene.

A juvenile passenger in the Honda was taken by Perry Township firefighters to Aultman Hospital with serious injuries.

Neither driver was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Speed is suspected to have been a factor.

The southbound lanes of U.S. Route 62, south of Navarre Road, were closed for approximately 3 1/2 hours while authorities investigated the crash.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted by the Massillon Police Department, Perry Township Police Department, Perry Township Fire Department, Erie Valley Fire Department, the Ohio Department of Transportation, the Stark County Coroner’s Office and Tracer’s Towing.

The crash remains under investigation.
