Man killed in Canton Township apartment fire

The Canton Township Fire Department is investigating a house fire that killed a man early Saturday morning.

According to Canton Township Fire Chief Chris Smith, crews were dispatched to 5022 Ridge SE. for reports of an apartment fire at 6:40 a.m.

68-year-old James Mammone Jr. died at the scene, according to investigators.

Three other residents made it out of the building safely, but are displaced and receiving assistance from the Red Cross.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The department received assistance from Canton City, East Sparta, Plain Township, Bolivar, Osnaburg Township, Nimishillen Township, and Perry Township. Also assisting was the Stark County Sheriff’s Office, State Fire Marshalls, and Stark County Coroner.
