CANTON, Ohio – A Canton man was killed in a hit-and-run accident on Monday night at the 1000 block of Market Avenue N, according to Canton police.

Horace Jones, 66, was traveling southbound on the roadway in the northbound lane when he was struck by the suspect vehicle, which traveled northbound on Market Avenue just after 8 p.m.

The suspect fled the scene, but the vehicle was later recovered by officers. The wheelchair-bound Jones was found unresponsive at the scene and transported to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital before succumbing to his wounds.

A Sarta driver reported the incident to police Monday night:

“One of our drivers just reported that they believe a man in a wheelchair was just hit by a car on [Market Avenue N].”

“And is the car still there?”

“[The driver] didn’t see a car. He saw the wheelchair in pieces, and the man laying on the road.”

The Canton Police Department Traffic Bureau is now investigating. Anyone with information relevant to the case is asked to contact the Canton Police Communications Center at (330) 649-5800. Anonymous tips may be sent through Tip411 at www.cantonohio.gov/police.
