UPDATE: A police report identifies the driver of the vehicle as 34-year-old Darling Ove of 13th Street NW, Canton.

Canton Police are investigating after a single-car accident left a 34-year-old woman dead.

According to police, the woman allegedly robbed a man at gunpoint and stole his vehicle before wrecking it and dying, according to Canton Lt. Dennis Garren.

A 40-year-old Canton man told police he was giving a car ride to a woman he didn’t know. They were on their way to Circle K when she pulled out a handgun. The owner of the vehicle pulled over at the Save-A-Lot on Tuscarawas St. and exited the vehicle. That’s when the woman jumped into the driver’s seat and fled the scene but returned, telling the man to go with her. He refused and she left again.

Moments later, police were dispatched to the 1100 block of Fulton Rd NW where they discovered the car, destroyed and the woman dead on arrival.

Police believe the woman was traveling a high rate of speed when she ran off the right side of the road, striking a tree and telephone pole.

Canton detectives and the traffic bureau are investigating the accident.
