A male passenger was seriously injured early Tuesday morning when a sport utility vehicle was struck and pushed by a train at a railroad crossing on Canton’s northeast side, fire officials said.
The Canton Fire Department responded around 1:35 a.m. to a train-versus-SUV collision at the crossing at Third Street Northeast and Rowland Avenue Northeast, according to a department news release.
Fire and EMS crews found the SUV entangled with the front of the train upon arrival. The driver had self-extricated from the vehicle before crews arrived, while a male passenger remained unconscious and trapped in the front passenger seat.
According to the train conductor, the train was traveling at approximately 28 mph when it struck the SUV, pushing the vehicle about a quarter of a mile before coming to a stop.
Firefighters used extrication tools to free the passenger, who was taken to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital with serious injuries. The driver suffered minor injuries and was transported to Aultman Hospital for evaluation.
No fatalities were reported. The incident remains under investigation.
The Canton Fire Department was dispatched at 1:35 a.m. and arrived on scene at 1:41 a.m., officials said.
