A 13-year-old boy was airlifted to Akron Children’s Hospital following a dirt bike crash Thursday in Wayne Township, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported shortly after 1 p.m. along Lower Trail Road near Trail Bottom Road. Sgt. Bill Bower, of the patrol’s New Philadelphia post, told Jordan Miller News the boy, who is from the Dundee area, was transported for evaluation of possible neck injuries and was later released.

Authorities said the boy had been wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Preliminary findings indicate the dirt bike left the roadway, went into a ditch and overturned, though investigators have not determined what led to the loss of control. The incident remains under investigation.

Bower said troopers are reviewing potential charges, including operating a dirt bike on a public roadway without a valid license and failure to maintain control. The case will be referred to a juvenile prosecutor for consideration.

Ohio law permits 14- and 15-year-olds to obtain a license to operate certain motorized bicycles or mopeds on public streets.
