Suspect dead, woman hospitalized after shooting in Plain Township

The Stark County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting that left a woman hospitalized and a man dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Deputies responded around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday to reports of gunfire at an apartment complex in the 4100 block of Orchard Dale Drive NW in Plain Township. When officers arrived, they found the male suspect inside the apartment.

The female victim had managed to escape and was transported to Aultman Hospital, where she is receiving treatment for multiple gunshot wounds. Her condition has not been released.

A child who was also inside the apartment during the shooting was unharmed and was able to escape to a neighboring apartment. The child has since been reunited with family members.

Deputies later found the male suspect dead inside the apartment from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Stark County Metro Task Force, Canton Regional SWAT, FBI, Plain Township Fire Department, and the Stark County Coroner’s Office all assisted at the scene.

The circumstances leading up to the shooting remain under investigation.
