A residential fire displaced several occupants of a two-unit home on Louisiana Avenue NW on Wednesday afternoon, according to the Canton Fire Department.

Fire crews were dispatched at 1:15 p.m. to the home at 1220 Louisiana Ave NW, where firefighters arrived minutes later and observed heavy smoke coming from the attic. A man and woman were found exiting the first-floor apartment with two dogs as crews arrived. The second-floor apartment was occupied by another man and woman, who were not home at the time of the fire.

Occupants told firefighters there may have been a fifth person living in the residence, though authorities said no further details were available Wednesday.

The home was deemed unsafe for occupancy due to the extent of the damage. The Red Cross was notified and is assisting the displaced occupants. The home was not insured, officials said.

No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported. Firefighters located a cat inside the structure after the fire was extinguished; the animal was unharmed.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Estimated losses were $30,000 to the structure and $10,000 to the contents, according to incident reports.
