A teenager was wounded in a shooting Thursday in Canton, and investigators beliege the victim was struck by stray gunfire.
According to a supplemental police report obtained by Jordan Miller News from the Canton Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 21, to the 2100 block of 4th Street NE for a reported shooting.
While officers were en route, dispatchers relayed a caller’s report that someone had been shot.
When police arrived, officers found the teenage victim lying in the front yard of a residence suffering from a gunshot wound just below the left shoulder. The victim was conscious and breathing when officers arrived. A tourniquet was applied before medics took over care.
Witnesses told police they were on the porch when the victim was shot and said the gunfire came from the east.
According to an initial police report, suspects were reportedly firing shots in the roadway when the teen was struck.
Investigators have not determined whether the victim was the intended target or was hit by a stray bullet.
As officers secured the scene, police checked nearby homes and vehicles for additional victims or property damage.
Police recovered shell casings near the intersection of 4th Street NE and Rice Avenue NE. Officers also located a bullet fragment on the porch of a nearby home.
A resident in the area told police they heard gunshots but did not witness the shooting.
Evidence was collected at the scene, and no suspects have been publicly identified.
The investigation remains ongoing.
