Authorities have identified the individuals involved in a single-vehicle crash early Saturday morning that left one man dead and another in custody.
According to the New Philadelphia Police Department, officers were called at about 2:06 a.m. Aug. 23 to South Broadway and Hilan Avenue SW for a report of a crash with injuries.
When officers arrived, they found the vehicle and a deceased adult male outside of it. Witnesses reported the man had been hanging out of the window of the Dodge Charger and pounding on the roof in an excited manner just before the crash. He has since been identified as 21-year-old Terron Henderson of New Philadelphia.
Police said the driver, identified as 37-year-old Janesh Levy Cabrera-Vargas, fled the scene on foot but was located and arrested a short distance away. Cabrera-Vargas has a Virginia driver’s license but currently lives and works in New Philadelphia.
Investigators believe speed and impairment contributed to the crash. Lab results are pending as the investigation continues.
Authorities thanked the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio State Highway Patrol, Tuscarawas County Coroner’s Office, New Philadelphia Fire Department, and New Philadelphia Street Department for assisting at the scene.
