Authorities in Columbus are investigating the death of a 3-year-old girl after her mother allegedly confessed to killing the child on New Year’s Eve.
Police said officers were dispatched to a home on Orson Drive early Wednesday evening after receiving a call reporting a child who was unresponsive. When first responders arrived, the girl was not breathing and showed no signs of life.
Efforts were made at the scene to revive the child before she was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, according to police.
Investigators said early findings indicate the child’s death was a homicide and believe the incident stemmed from a domestic situation.
The girl’s mother, identified by police as 41-year-old Sharon Sakoulos, was taken into custody and later acknowledged her involvement in the child’s death, authorities said. She is currently being held at the Franklin County Jail.
Police have not released further details, and no additional charges have been announced as the investigation continues.
