A 40-year-old Massillon man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after police said he fled officers attempting to serve a felony warrant and was later connected to a nearby hit-skip crash.
Detectives with the Massillon Police Department attempted to serve the warrant on Nelson White just after 3 p.m. Feb. 24 at a residence in the 200 block of Elmford Avenue SW in Perry Township, according to Lt. Nick Antonides, the department’s public information officer.
As officers tried to take White into custody, he fled the home in an SUV, driving through neighborhood yards toward Tuscarawas Street in an attempt to avoid arrest, police said. Officers initiated a brief pursuit but lost sight of the vehicle.
While searching in the direction the suspect fled, officers were alerted to a hit-skip injury crash that had just occurred at the intersection of Jackson Avenue and 12th Street NW. Witnesses provided a vehicle description consistent with the SUV involved in the earlier incident, Antonides said.
A short time later, officers located the suspect vehicle unoccupied in the 2800 block of Kipling Avenue NW in Jackson Township. Multiple patrol units established a perimeter, and the department’s K-9 unit and drone team were deployed to assist in the search.
At 3:34 p.m., officers found White in the 7400 block of Hills and Dales Road NW in Jackson Township, where he was taken into custody without further incident.
White was transported to the Stark County Jail and booked on an outstanding felony warrant for menacing by stalking, a fourth-degree felony, and assault, a first-degree misdemeanor. Additional charges related to the incident are pending, police said.
