Police have confirmed they have found the remains of Ryan T. Godbey, a 26-year-old Canton man who had been missing since June, and charged another man with his murder.

Canton Police Chief John Gabbard said investigators, assisted by the FBI, located human remains in July while searching a wooded area in southern Stark County. DNA testing conducted by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation has confirmed the remains are those of Godbey, who was reported missing by his family on June 22.

Daniel Z. Mattay, 34, of Canton, has been charged in connection with Godbey’s death. He was indicted by a Stark County grand jury on Aug. 27 and remains in the Stark County Jail.

Mattay faces multiple charges, including murder, felonious assault, strangulation, domestic violence, tampering with evidence, and gross abuse of a corpse, according to the Canton Police Department.

Police have not released details about how Godbey was killed, but said the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information related to the case is asked to contact the Canton Police Detective Bureau at 330-489-3144 or submit anonymous tips through Tip411 or the Stark County Crime Stoppers.
