A 35-year-old man was killed early Saturday after being struck by a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed in Akron’s Highland Square neighborhood, according to police.
Akron police said officers responded around 2:05 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, to West Market Street and South Highland Avenue for a serious crash involving a pedestrian and multiple vehicles.
A preliminary investigation found that a red Chrysler 300 was traveling west on West Market Street at a high rate of speed when it struck the 35-year-old man as he was crossing the street. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have not released his identity.
After striking the pedestrian, the Chrysler continued west and rear-ended a Buick Encore before colliding with two parked vehicles, a Nissan Altima and a Honda Pilot, police said.
The 45-year-old woman driving the Chrysler and the 57-year-old man driving the Buick were taken to Cleveland Clinic Akron General with serious injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.
Akron police traffic officers said speed is believed to have been a factor in the crash. Investigators also found evidence indicating the Chrysler’s driver may have been impaired, according to the department.
The Akron Police Department’s Accident Reconstruction Unit is investigating. Police said investigators are reviewing evidence to determine what charges, if any, will be filed.
